Gardenias are growing in my garden

Who doesn’t love the smell of gardenias, especially on a warm summer’s night? Gardenias have become firm favourites with Australian gardeners and I have decided to give them another go after years of hit and misses. Their evergreen good looks and their refined, white, stunningly perfumed flowers are to be adored.

I planted two gardenia bushes just over 12 months ago and recently they have flowered for the second time. This time I did it right. Gave them plenty of sun, shelter and good drainage and treated them with magnesium from early on.

A vase of fresh gardenias is enough to fragrance any room and who wouldn’t prefer that to any room freshner?

Did you know…..

In the language of flowers, the gardenia seems to be a breath taking flower in floral arrangements. Indeed, it brings honour and stands for feminine beauty. It is said that the biblical figure, Solomon, offered a gardenia flower each morning to each of the women in his harem. This was done in order to ease tensions and jealousies.

Between a rose and camellia, the gardenia boasts the charms of femininity with elegance and a lot of delicacy. Thus, offering a gardenia to a beloved one is a sign of good taste and good manners.

If you are at loss of words, you can always give this beautiful flower. It could be interpreted as “you are beautiful and adorable.” It boils down to the fact that gardenia symbolizes faithful love and shyness.
